7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1
The opportunity I’m pursuing is the problem of the lack of parking in my apartment complex, in Tampa FL. The issue is being a residence her and not having at least one assigned parking for yourself. Therefore, walking a long distance to your apartment has been an escalated issue in my neighborhood.

The Who: The residence in my neighborhood
The What: Not being able to find closer parking spots to your apartment building
The Why: Inconvenience of locating spots near your building, especially for carrying groceries or other heavy items.

Testing the who: Not only are the residence of the apartments are “The Who” but also the property staff and guest
Testing the what: Being able to be assigned at least one parking spot for residence only.
Testing the why: Driving and walking long distance in the neighborhood with heavy items, your children, and other things to get to your apartment.

Interview #1: Ran into one of my neighbors outside while taking her dog on a walk, she started to state how bad parking has been. She suggested as well, that we are needing assigned parking passes for residence only.

Interview #2: Spoke with another neighbor, in which, this individual was really upset of how far of a distance she had to walk with her newborn baby and all the baby items. Also, having to walk back and forth with her child due to no parking spaces by the building. She was in fact furious.

Interview #3: This interviewee understands this has been an ongoing discussion in our neighborhood and has not input, due to not having a car. Therefore, not having many parking spots by her building does not concern her.

Interview #4: This is neighbor believes this shouldn’t be a problem. As the property staff should not have a problem supporting the residence complaints.

Interview #5: This is a property staff interviewee, who supports other residence suggestions and complaints. This employee does live in the community and has a hard time finding a park as well by their building. In result, employee has stated, this situation is in the works of being resolved to have assigned parking for residence only.

All in all, reviewing an analysis on my neighbors’ interviews, I have resulted not just myself
have been frustrated with this issue, but also multiple neighbors as well. The reason our community needs to assign at least on parking spot for residence. This will reduce the residence complaints, lower frustration for residence to find parking and, striving to resolve residence inconvenience in the comfort of their home

  1. Hi Miriam,
I like the fact that you talked to an actual staff member as well, as finding the right customer or the one that can change something is crucial here. I myself struggled at first when I identified a wrong target group, when I thought about offering a basic financial training course. If you sold e.g. a new way parking spots could be structured or assigned, having the property management as a customer, the benefits should be stated well enough. E.g. having an assigned parking spot, residents would be willing to pay more rent. The rate of people moving out and moving in might be lower. It would be interesting to see how many residents have actually acted on the issue (e.g. moving out) and if they - including you - would be willing to pay more for a solution. Perhaps these thoughts might help when it comes to finding a solution!

  2. Hi Miriam,
This is a common problem most people seem to have nowadays. There seem to be so many new buildings and apartments being built, the parking just gets smaller and smaller. This can become an issue especially at night when you may be out late and can't seem to find a safe place to park near your building. I love how you spoke to your neighbors and those people who are directly effected by your problem. This change may be difficult, but it is possible.

  3. Hi Miriam,

I have noticed that apparently there are many apartment complexes that deal with this same problem. I believe this is unfair and just not practical for those who pay to live there considering they can't even have a guaranteed parking spot. I wonder what kind of solution could be put in place, maybe this solution may prove to be costly for the residents.
